Mullewa break three-year GNFL losing streak with win over Northampton

It had been 1100 days, 36 months or three years and four days since Mullewa Football Club’s last league win in the GNFL.

That now distant memory came in round six of the 2019 GNFL season against Chapman Valley.

Fast forward to round six of the 2022 season and the Saints finally broke their three-year losing streak when they defeated Northampton by 15 points at Mullewa Town Oval on Sunday.

The Saints have struggled during this period, coming close on many occasions but ultimately falling short.

However, this came to an end at the weekend as they overturned a 12 point Rams’ lead at half-time to win 9.12 (66) to 7.9 (51).

Mullewa coach Preston Wall said he was proud of his team’s performance.

“Yeah, I think we’ve been building to get this first win,” Wall said.

“I think we should already have three wins but after getting that first one, hopefully we build our confidence with many more wins to come for the season,” he said.

“I think our defensive unit is working really well, we got five goals kicked on us in the second quarter but for the other three quarters we only conceded two or three combined.”

Wall said it all started with their hard work at training.

“It’s starting to put us in good stead, getting the senior boys more to training, we’re getting like 40 people at training which we haven’t had in the past couple years.”

Following their bye, Mullewa will face Chapman Valley in round eight.

“Hopefully we can get another one on the board,” he said.

“We’ve got a good feeling around the club, everyone’s starting to commit to what we’re trying to build and getting on board so we’re going in the right direction.”

Sunday’s win lifted Mullewa from last to fifth on the GNFL ladder.

They are now one of four teams with one win, along with Northampton, Towns and Chapman Valley. However, in another context, they are only just outside the top four on percentage.
