Expanded storytelling about Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s people, mining heritage, Aboriginal culture and history is now easily accessible at the Museum of the Goldfields through a new digital guide.
The free digital mobile guide allows visitors to scan a QR code with their smartphones to access a diverse range of additional photographs, videos, transcripts and object stories, enabling visitors to explore content at their own pace and follow their own interests.
Supported by Gold Fields and the Foundation for the WA Museum, the guide provides a deeper experience for visitors by providing access to in-depth information and historical context, allowing users to uncover diverse stories behind collections and exhibitions.
Content accessed through the digital guide can continue to be accessed long after the visit.
WA Museum chief executive Alec Coles said digital guides were a valuable addition to museums.
“Not only do they provide a dynamic space to showcase a diverse range of content, but they facilitate visitor-led experiences, whilst enabling those visitors to collect and capture information and stories for future reference,” he said.
Gold Fields vice-president external affairs Australia Claire Walker said the project represented an exciting evolution in how regional stories were shared, experienced and preserved.
“By combining digital innovation with authentic community storytelling, the Museum of the Goldfields is creating richer, more meaningful connections between people and place while strengthening cultural tourism, educational engagement and accessibility,” she said.
Foundation for the WA Museum chief executive Coralie Bishop said she was proud to support the project.
“This digital guide honours the region’s rich mining history and First Nations connections, amplifying local voices and making heritage accessible to everyone,” she said.
“Projects like this strengthen community partnerships and ensure these important stories are preserved and shared for generations to come.”
