Red Earth Arts Festival takes over Karratha for 13th time

The hotly anticipated annual Red Earth Arts Festival took over Karratha at the weekend, featuring an array of dance music and arts spectacles for festival goers to enjoy. The 13th annual Red Earth Arts Festival kicked off on May 4 with performances inspired by the Pilbara’s diverse marine life taking place across several venues. Kicking off the festivities was a performance of Juluwarlu’s Ngurra Nyujunggamu — When the World Was Soft, with the spectacular large-scale outdoor performance sharing the important creation stories of Yindjibarndi culture. Sugar Blue Burlesque and headline act, the world-famous Burlesque Queen Imogen Kelly, then had locals in stitches with their show Deep Blue Tease on May 5. Other highlights included the hilarious Lucy Peach and her show My Greatest Period ever and the family-friendly quiz for all Star Wars fans May 4. The festival also included performances from the Gogi Dance Collective, Gina Williams and Guy Gouse, The Kill Devil Hills, Tomboy, WA Badass Gospel Choir, This Way North, Sarah Pellicano, Small Town and a host of other artists. Festival goers could also partake in a nature walk with WA Museum Head of Aquatic Zoology Dr Lisa Kirkendale and Technical officer Corey Whisson for an informative and interactive beach walk. The annual festival is presented by the City of Karratha, with support from principal partner, Rio Tinto, and a range of community partners.
