Geraldton down EGSRA in the 33rd FeNaClNG Squash Tournament final at Dampier Squash Club
Close to 100 players from across the State headed to Dampier and Karratha for the 33rd FeNaClNG Squash Tournament with Geraldton claiming the coveted championship.
Held over the FeNaClNG weekend from July 30-31, the tournament had teams different towns including Broome, Bunbury, Blue Gum, Cambridge, Eastern Goldfields, Geraldton and Karratha compete across four grades.
Other teams also included Wickham, Victoria Park, Mirrabooka and Dampier with a total of 92 players taking part.
The action-packed tournament —a highlight of the WA squash calendar— was won by Geraldton in a thrilling final against the Eastern Goldfields team.
Both teams were the powerhouses of the tournament with EGSRA entering the final undefeated with 56 points and Geraldton having secured 72 points during the pool stage of the competition.
In the opening round of the final, Geraldton’s Dwayne Simmons took on Heddwyn Brahma in a hard fought five game set with Simmons coming out on top 56-31.0
Geraldton’s Geoff Watters then took on Luke Seinor and won the contest before Jerome Church faced off against EGSRA Diego Hernandez.
Church proved too strong for Hernandez, winning in three games 11-7, 11-9 and 12-10.
The final round had Brad Hibbs take on EGSRA’s Daniel Hogan in a gruelling five game thriller.
The gruelling round saw the two players tied at two games each going into the fifth and final game.
Hibbs kept his composure taking down Hogan 11-5 to win three games to two.
In the end it meant Geraldton took the victory 173-115 with 12 games to four.
Meanwhile in the B grade competition Cambridge took on Broome in a hard fought game with Cambridge proving too strong in the end.
In C grade, Wickham took down the visiting Cambridge side winning nine games to seven with a total points score of 152-138.
The D grade final was decided by just four points with Hot Mess claiming the win 124-120 over Dampier.
