Subsidised one-way fares from between Perth and the Pilbara, starting at $199, have been announced as efforts continue to support the North West tourism industry after the devastation wrought by cyclone Narelle.
The State Government announced on May 6 that it would renew its “affordable airfares program” for 2026, with travellers able to access the cheap fares to Exmouth through Qantas.
The initiative also covers Broome and Kununurra with tourism minister Reece Whitby saying the program was a key part of supporting regional WA, helping local businesses, hospitality, and tourism operators get back on their feet.
“Many WA businesses remain ready to welcome visitors after cyclone Narelle, and we encourage people to continue to travel and support local businesses,” he said.
“The Affordable Airfares Program delivers significant savings for travellers, which can be reinvested locally, helping grow tourism in some of WA’s most beautiful and remote areas.”
Exmouth shire president Matt Niikkula said the return of the Affordable Airfares Program was good news for the Exmouth community and for visitors, as the town continues to rebuild momentum after tropical cyclone Narelle.
“We are very much open for business, and more accessible travel options to our remote region mean stronger support for cyclone‑impacted local businesses and operators,” he said.
“There is no better time to book and plan ahead to enjoy what this extraordinary place has to offer.”
Transport minister Rita Saffioti highlighted the importance of keeping regional tourism accessible.
“This program is about making it more affordable for people to visit our regions and support local jobs,” she said.
The Government said the Affordable Airfares Program had a strong track record, selling nearly 178,000 fares since 2018, including more than 28,000 last year for flights connecting Perth with Broome, Kununurra, and Exmouth.
The program complements other recovery efforts, including a $1.45 million Tourism Business Support Package, consumer voucher programs, disaster relief payments and the new Premier’s Natural Disaster Recovery Fund, which provides financial support for local businesses and community groups affected by cyclone Narelle.
