Year 7 students brought their families along to a barbecue last Thursday to mark a new phase of their education.

Held in the quad of Karratha Senior High School, the new students and their parents enjoyed a casual evening where they met their teachers, explored the school grounds and participated in activities.

The students’ first taste of high school was off to a disrupted start, however, as tropical cyclone Damien caused the school to close for more than a week, but they were now settled as classes returned to normal last Monday.

Karratha Senior High School principal Mario Tufilli said there were about 260 Year 7 students beginning high school this year, but they were still getting some late enrolments.

Mr Tufilli said the Year 7 students must study compulsory core subjects, but have the ability to pick their electives.

“Most Year 7s at other schools don’t get to pick their electives, they have to do a rotation,” he said.

Mr Tufilli said there were many exciting industry opportunities planned for the students this year.
