An ammonia producer in the Pilbara passed an export milestone recently when it reached 10 million tonnes of product shipped through Dampier Port.

Yara Pilbara reached the 10 million mark on July 24 when the specialised carrier Quebecwas loaded with 14,000 tonnes of ammonia set for Indonesia and Thailand.

It was the 444th cargo since the first ammonia shipment from the Pilbara port in June 2006.

The company exports ammonia to customers in Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan, and domestically supplies processors in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales.

Yara Pilbara general manager Laurent Trost said the company’s Pilbara plant produced almost 5 per cent of the world’s tradeable ammonia.

“Our ammonia operations have been the foundation on which we are creating a processing innovation hub in the Pilbara,” he said.

“In partnership with Orica, we have added a technical ammonium nitrate facility to supply the mining industry, and now our joint venture with Engie adds further processing technology by producing green ammonia using renewable hydrogen.

“Ammonia has already been proven as an efficient and safe way to transport hydrogen, and as of today we have 10 million examples that show we can do it.”

Mr Trost said reaching the export milestone was a tribute to the efficiency of companies and support organisations in the Pilbara.

He said Yara Pilbara’s supply chain was a major advantage by providing ready-made export gateways to deliver industrial scale renewable hydrogen and green ammonia into potential markets.
