Wildlife photographer Gary Meredith passes on top tips in Exmouth

A host of Exmouth residents got a rare lesson in wildlife imagery with award-winning photographer Gary Meredith this month. The photographer, widely lauded for his Pilbara dingo and rainbow bee-eater snaps, visited Exmouth to hold the intimate lesson for 15 locals at Town Beach, focusing on natural lighting and perspectives. The artist was in town for his solo exhibition, on display at the Tantabiddi Travelling Gallery. Meredith was awarded the Australian Nature Photographer of the Year 2019 and last year took home the gong for the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year — People's Choice award. The visit was organised by the local shire as part of his exhibition, with the organisation aiming to highlight how creativity can make a difference on a local level. Shire president Matt Niikkula said Exmouth had a thriving community of wildlife photographers. “All are trying to capture that fleeting moment of wonder that nature can create,” he said. “So while professional photographers had the chance to meet the Perth-based artist at the exhibition opening to talk about his work and experience, the intimate community workshop offered the opportunity to get creative of an entry-level and among all ages.”
