A cake maker and decorator from Wickham is bound for the nation’s biggest cake event in May to hone her skills with some of the world’s baking stars.

Shae Lukas, a baker by trade who has lived in the Pilbara for about four years and runs home-based business Shae’s Cakes and Cookies, will be attending the Australian Cake Oscar Awards in Brisbane to learn from the best in the industry after scoring one of a limited number of tickets to the prestigious event.

Ms Lukas said she was passionate about cake artistry, from cupcakes through to 3D cake designs, and was excited to be representing the Pilbara at the awards.

She said going to the Cake Oscars would be like meeting and learning from “the Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston of cakes”.

“I want to get the confidence to see how other people do things for display, because I want to be a demonstrator and I want to be able to run one of those stalls, where people learn from me,” she said.

“I’d also like to eventually have big stars coming here (the Pilbara) and put on courses and start teaching.”

“I’ve only been open for 15 months and I’ve got more than 2200 likes on my (business) Facebook page, so it’s just so crazy.”

Ms Lukas said she hoped to set up her own bakery in the future and the international event would help her take her another step towards achieving that dream.

As well as an awards ceremony, the Cake Oscars include skills demonstrations and classes, competitions, meet and greets with star guests and networking.
