The $5 million upgrade of the only public pool in Exmouth is a step closer after the project received $750,000 from the State Government.

The Shire of Exmouth applied for the grant in September to help fund the upgrades to the Paltridge Memorial Swimming Pool.

The funding from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund will go towards the first stage of the redevelopment, estimated to cost $4.1m, which includes a new pump room, wet decks, heating for the wading pool, and disability access to the 50m lap pool. Last year Shire of Exmouth officers found the facility needed a multimillion-dollar upgrade to bring it in line with national standards.

Deputy Shire President Ben Dixon said the pool was heavily used by the community.

Sports Minister Mick Murray said the pool played a vital role in encouraging physical activity in the Exmouth community.
