A bushfire warning has been issued for travellers through the Shire of Ashburton along the Great Northern Highway.

A fire has begun burning on the eastern side of the Highway 20 kilometres south of the Karijini Drive intersection in Juna Downs.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has said while no roads have yet been closed, there is a lot of smoke in the area and motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.

Drivers are asked to turn on headlights if they have to drive through the area, watch for emergency services personnel and follow their directions.

The bushfire is moving slowly in a south westerly direction and is still out of control and unpredictable.

Firefighters are monitoring the situation and the cause of the fire is unknown.
