Roebourne-based Ngarluma filmmaker Tyson Mowarin has been nominated for a 2018 West Australian of the Year Award.

Mr Mowarin was nominated among three others in the local hero category for his work in bringing to light the stories for Aboriginal people in the Pilbara through film.

Winners will be announced on November 22 in Perth.

Recipients will then be in the running for the national awards, held in Canberra on January 25.

National Australia Day Council chief executive Jenny Barbour said the nominees provided inspiration to everyone.

“The Australian of the Year Awards allow us to recognise and celebrate the achievements of outstanding Australians – people making extraordinary contributions to our society,” she said.

VideoWest Australian of the year says it would be easier to celebrate on January 26 if there was equality.
