Two people have died after a microlight plane crashed into a Cape Range National Park canyon south of Exmouth.

The alarm was raised about 4.30pm yesterday after the plane failed to return to the Exmouth aerodrome.

Police found the wreckage at about 7.30pm.

Exmouth is a popular place for microlights and tourism flights do operate in the area.

A recovery operation will begin this morning.

More to come.
