Karratha-raised actor Joel Jackson will return to national television screens next month in a new Australian-made miniseries.

Safe Harbour is a psycho-logical thriller about a group of Australian friends whose sailing holiday takes a dangerous turn when they cross paths with an overloaded asylum seeker boat.

Jackson plays one of the five friends who decide to tow the boat to safety, but wake up the next day to find it gone.

Five years later, they have their worlds turned upside down when they find out it was one of them who cut the connecting rope, with tragic consequences.

SBS television and online content director Marshall Heald called the show “one of SBS’ proudest achievements”. “It’s not only a gripping thriller that will keep audiences guessing, but an exploration of the ethical decisions people make under pressure,” he said.

“It combines high-concept drama with relatable characters that put a human lens on an issue typically only discussed in news and current affairs programs and political debate. Safe Harbour forces us to ask hard questions of ourselves.”

The four-part series also stars well-known Australian actors Ewen Leslie, Leeanna Walsman and Phoebe Tonkin.

Safe Harbour is scheduled to air at 8.30pm on Wednesday, March 7 on SBS.
