State Gov allocates funding to fight erosion of WA’s coastline

The State Government has allocated $18.5 million over the next five years to fight erosion of WA’s coastline as part of the 2021-2022 State Budget, including projects in Karratha and Exmouth. A grant of $37,500 will be provided to the City of Karratha to implement the recommendations of the Cleaverville foreshore management plan to close and rehabilitate the tracks. The Shire of Exmouth will receive $90,000 to develop a coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plan for the townsite. Transport and Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said the government would continue to work to address coastal erosion while advocating for a nationwide approach to manage the issue. “We have some of the most beautiful beaches here in Western Australia and they are loved by locals and tourists alike,” she said. “However, they are very fragile environments and it’s important we have the right programs in place to protect our coastline, now and into the future. “The new funding will go towards addressing key hotspots highlighted in the 2019 (Assessment of Coastal Erosion Hotspots) report, helping to form coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plans and collect data to inform future solutions.” Shire of Exmouth acting chief executive Matt Bird said the CHRMAP would identify coastal hazards, examine the vulnerability of coastal infrastructure and provide an implementation plan. “Ultimately, the CHRMAP will provide a clear pathway for the Shire to address coastal hazard risks over time,” he said. “Currently, the project area includes the coastal area adjacent to the Exmouth townsite, roughly between the Exmouth Golf Course to just south of the Exmouth Boat Harbour and marina. “Community engagement and participation will be important as part of the CHRMAP process, and the Shire encourages community members and stakeholders to be involved. Information on how the community can be involved will be released as the project progresses.” The City of Karratha was contacted for comment.
