Songs For Peace concert returns to Roebourne, sharing stories through songs and music

Nationally acclaimed artists came together on the weekend with local Roebourne musicians for a community concert celebrating joy, peace and living culture. Held at the amphitheatre of Ngurin Cultural Centre on Saturday, Songs For Peace saw performances from Vikki Thorn, Naomi Pigram, Tyson Mowarin, Fred Ryan alongside the Roebourne community. Big hART producer Andy Clark said the event brought the Roebourne community together. “It’s really the coming together of everyone to write their own songs, tell their own stories and display that in a really positive way and share it with all the audience,” he said. “I hope people were able to dive deeply and engage deeply with the songs, their subject matters and really hear what the community has to sing about.” Local musician Michelle Adams said telling stories through song and music kept them connected. “I’m a leader in this community, I deserve to have this space to talk about issues through songs and to bring awareness and attention on matters that impact everybody, not just Indigenous people, because music is universal,” she said. “If you can’t bring awareness to issues through music, there would be conflict so music cuts over conflict. “It allows people to have a safe space to share and just be human, to have feelings, and not to walk away or to turn your eyes away from things that matter.” Other highlights of the night also included the Red Air Project light installation which aimed to pay homage to the spirit of the land.
