The only semi-submersible catamaran vessel in WA now has a new home in Exmouth. Locals Lucy Tait and Matthew Ruthven launched View Ningaloo this month, offering coral viewing and snorkelling packages out of Tantabiddi. The unique Sub Sea Explorer vessel, which has previously operated out of Coral Bay, was built in the late 1980s and provides a different perspective for coral viewing. “Instead of looking down like a traditional glass bottom boat, you go down and it’s a catamaran so you sit in and you face outwards and you’re looking out through the hull,” Ms Tait said. “There are eight windows down one hull on the starboard side and then again on the port side there is another eight.” While View Ningaloo has only been operating for a short time, Ms Tait said launching a tourism business in the middle of a global pandemic had been smooth sailing. “I guess because of the global pandemic...people have stepped back and taken stock of what they’re really doing with their life,” she said. “We just wanted to have a crack at a family business. We love living in Exmouth. “I was kind of surprised at how many people were really supportive. I think that being a small community, loads of people have wished us luck.” Ms Tait said she was looking forward to welcoming more tourists following recent bad weather.
