SAFE Karratha takes home RSPCA Gold award in the the community awards category

The hard work and dedication of a local non-profit to save animals in the North West has been recognised at the recent RSPCA awards. The RSPCA awards night was held earlier this month in Perth with Saving Animals From Euthanasia receiving the gold award in the community awards category. The organisation was created in 2003 in Karratha to address the lack of animal rescues in the North West and has expanded to 11 branches across regional WA. SAFE has saved more than 32,000 animals across the State in that time. SAFE founder Sue Hedley said the organisation was originally founded to save pets from unnecessary deaths. “It was a great honour for SAFE to receive the RSPCA WA gold award in the community action award category,” she said. “It is wonderful recognition for the relentless life saving work that SAFE achieves across our vast state.” “SAFE is relieved to know that in the near future a very much needed RSPCA inspector will be based in Broome who will work alongside SAFE and the local shire in animal rescue.” Ms Hedley said the organisation’s work was only possible through help from local governments. “It means so much for the sustainability of SAFE Karratha that our local council, City of Karratha are prepared to work in partnership with SAFE and assist in banking us financially for the longer term,” she said. “Karratha council are forerunners in a number of areas but as supporters of their community animals rescue group they set a great precedent and are a guiding light to follow for other councils and shires across Western Australia.”
