Roebourne students hunt for missing school time capsule

Students and teachers from Roebourne District High School are in a desperate rush to find a missing time capsule before the school is redeveloped, potentially burying the 60-year-old relic forever. The time capsule was believed to be buried at the school in 1961. RDHS principal Ian Browning said staff and students wanted to find it before works to rebuild the school began. “The school is 60 years old and we just start to hear about a time capsule being buried somewhere in the grounds,” he said. “We've only just heard about it because the architects, of all people, were discussing it.” Mr Browning said the students were excited to try to solve the mystery of its whereabouts. “It would be very important to the community to have a look and see what sort of mementos were put in into the ground in 1961 and for future generations to look at,” he said. He said clues had begun to trickle in about possible locations for the capsule. “We've had one former student point to an area out by one of our demountable buildings, but we also believe that we are looking at the original buildings, and there's a central space around the original building,” he said. “We think it might well be located somewhere there.” Mr Browning said the school would be likely to bury a new time capsule to coincide with the planned redevelopment.
