Rio Tinto and City of Karratha agreement sets 35 years of planning in motion for Dampier normalisation

Dampier residents have welcomed the City of Karratha’s acquisition of a host of local sites from Rio Tinto after a long-awaited plan spanning more than three decades. Ten parcels of land were transferred at a recent signing ceremony, enabling the City to develop the land and improve the town’s liveability, community and tourism opportunities. The idea first came about some 35 years ago; however in the past eight years, the parties have been working closely towards the formal agreement. Dampier Community Association president Gill Furlong said it was an exciting time to have the town “normalised”, and hoped it would lead to infrastructure upgrades. “Certainly from the community association’s point of view, we are very supportive and very excited for this change,” she said. “A lot of our infrastructure is very tired out here. We’ve got this amazing new foreshore, so a lot of our older buildings, like our sports club and the pavilion, a lot of these are very tired and they just need to be regenerated and hopefully this is the opportunity that will happen for us here in Dampier. “Rio Tinto’s core business is iron ore, whereas a City, their core business is cities, so it makes sense for the City now to manage all our infrastructure.” A Rio Tinto spokesperson said the signing of the agreement was a significant milestone for Rio Tinto and the City of Karratha, and a positive outcome for the local community. “The Dampier land transfer project will help support the City’s future redevelopment plans to boost the liveability and attractiveness of the region and forms part of the long-term transition of responsibility for town management from Rio Tinto to the City of Karratha,” they said. “Through our community services and infrastructure partnership, Rio Tinto and the City of Karratha continue to work together to improve town amenity to attract and retain families to live, work and play in the region.” The agreement for the transfer is subject to State Government consents and approvals. The City of Karratha did not respond by the time of print.
