Resort will bring tourists

Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s plans for his proposed $85 million Exmouth resort have been welcomed, with the State Government among those backing the hotel to boost the town as a top tourism destination. Forrest family owned investment group Tattarang last month revealed the first artist impressions of the world-class Ningaloo Lighthouse Holiday Park redevelopment at Vlamingh Head set to transform the northern town. Shire of Exmouth President Matthew Niikkula said the resort could be a positive for the site “The designed redevelopment seems to blend into our unique landscape and preserves the remote values and landscape character of the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse,” he said. “At the same time, the different accommodation options and amenities showcased with the artwork will attract a wide range of visitors and support Exmouth in its further establishment as a top tourism destination.” Mr Niikkula said council supported the development in principle as it offered full-time employment and ticked many business and tourism objectives. “An investment like the proposed $85 million redevelopment is transformational for this destination, not unlike Lord McAlpine's investment in Broome many years ago,” he said. “A venture like this will likely encourage other investors to develop accommodation and tour offerings.” Tourism Minister Paul Papalia also welcomed the proposed development, saying the resort was exactly what WA wants right now. “Tourism Western Australia recognised this project from the moment they saw it as one we must support,” he said. “It’s a world-class facility being built in a beautiful world-class destination. “This is a fantastic initiative and it will really step things up. Exmouth is a brilliant destination.” Mr Papalia said more accommodation options for tourists was a plus. “One of the things I’ve heard constantly from visitors to Exmouth and surrounds is it’s a beautiful place but it’s really packed. Any additional quality accommodation would be welcomed by everybody,” he said. A development application is set to be submitted to the Shire in the coming weeks.
