Karratha car torching causes $280,000 damage

Staff reporterPilbara News

Two cars parked outside a Nickol home have been set alight in the early hours of this morning in an incident estimated to have caused more than $200,000 in damage, and police are asking the public for any information that could assist.

Around midnight, residents of a home in Ridge Elbow awoke to find two vehicles parked in their driveway, both recent SV model Holden Commodores, on fire.

Both cars were destroyed in the blaze, which also caused extensive damage to the carport roof.

The total cost of damage is estimated to be $280,000.

West Pilbara Detectives would like to speak to anyone in the vicinity of Ridge Elbow who may have seen any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area between 11.30pm and 1am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Carlos Correia said the residents of the property were shaken and wanted to find out what had happened.

He said the fire had also presented a risk to nearby property and people in the suburban street.

“It had the potential to cause further damage to the house and also injury or death of people if the owners hadn’t acted when they did, so we’re just lucky in that aspect of it,” he said.

“Fires of their nature can get out of control and luckily the owners were able to get outside and were hosing down their vehicles until the firies got there.”
