Poignant tribute to Dorrie: Memories of Pilbara massacre, nuclear bombs and the last Marthudunera speaker

The third anniversary of the loss of a national treasure quietly passed earlier this year. Dorrie Wally, regarded as the last fluent speaker of the Marthudunera language, passed just as quietly three years ago. Though little-known beyond her community, she embodied a living archive of culture, history, and resilience — her life a bridge to Ngurra Nyujunggamu, “when the world was soft.” Born under the Budjalla tree at Mardie Station in 1936, Dorrie grew up travelling the Fortescue and Robe rivers with her parents, Mirbin and Topsy. She learnt every yinta (waterhole), every kinship tie, and every seasonal rhythm. “I knew every yinta in those rivers,” she once said. For her, landscape was not scenery but memory and lore. Yet her childhood bore both joy and fracture. After losing her mother young, she and her sister Linda moved between Onslow and Roebourne, raised by grandparents and later reunited with family at Mardie. Like many Aboriginal children, her early life mixed freedom on country with the disruptions of settler violence and government policy. As a teenager, Dorrie witnessed something few would ever experience. She stood atop a tank at Mardie Station, peering through a bottle to watch the 1952 nuclear test on the Montebello Islands. The government was testing bombs. “Flame just went ‘boosh’… and flash! And is a mushroom on the top,” she recalled decades later. Her youth was spent working on Pilbara pastoral stations, pushing iron-wheeled barrows, cooking, and cleaning. She laughed about the hard wheelbarrow, but her humour couldn’t mask the weight of poorly paid Aboriginal labour that kept pastoral empires running. The arrival of mining and railways marked another rupture. “Everything’s changed,” she said. “The trees. River.” Her words captured the ecological and spiritual dislocation that still resonates in Aboriginal communities. But one of the greatest burdens Dorrie carried was the family memory of the Flying Foam Massacre of 1868, one of the bloodiest episodes of frontier violence in northern Australia. The killings of her people began after the deaths of a police officer and a pearler on Murujuga (the Burrup Peninsula). In reprisal, settlers and pearlers launched punitive expeditions, shooting Yaburara people and their allies across the islands and coast. Despite this violence, there remain streets in Roebourne named after the perpetrators of the massacre. I later visited Dorrie at places named after people who killed her ancestors. Estimates vary as to the casualty count, but certainly entire family groups were lost. Dorrie knew this story intimately, because it was also her family’s story. Her father’s grandfather was among those who saw the killings. She recalled, in the 2015 film Dorrie’s Story: “And that’s where my ancestors got massacred, you know? My Dad’s family. More than my Dad’s family. My grandfather saw.” For Dorrie, the massacre was not a distant historical footnote. It was living memory, carried through generations, shaping her family’s survival. She described white men with guns, Aboriginal people standing their ground with spears, and the impossibility of wood against bullets. “They thought they could beat (the white man’s) gun,” she said. “They get shot.” Her memories stretched even further. As a child, she remembered hearing some of the old people speaking Yaburara. Fragments of the language lived in her mind. That she could recall these voices shows how close she stood to the line where cultures and languages were broken by violence. By speaking these truths, Dorrie refused to let silence erase either Marthudunera or Yaburara memory. She bore witness not only for her family, but for all who had no voice left to tell their story. I first met Dorrie while working for the Kuruma Marthudunera. Her daughter, Anne, invited me to their home on Cleaver Terrace. Anne asked her if she could still speak Marthudunera. “I don’t know if I can still speak it — it’s been so long since I’ve spoken with another Marthudunera person. When you don’t have another speaker, you lose a language.” I had brought recordings of the late Elder Algy Paterson speaking Marthudunera, made with a linguist in the 1990s. With her permission, I played the recordings. Dorrie listened, eyes closing, as if time folded back, and smiled. Then she began to speak — Marthudunera, fluent and alive. Anne beamed. Dorrie endured immense personal loss. When her husband, David Wally, died in 1970, she brought him home by horse and cart to be buried. She raised many children and grandchildren, later caring for both her fathers. She remained active in ceremony, which remains strong across the Pilbara. In her final years at Yaandina Aged Care, I often visited her. She would be playing solitaire on her bed. She’d chuckle at me, this whitefella who was in awe of her. She would ask after her grandchildren who I knew. Even in her final years, her sense of kinship was undiminished. Her daughter Anne died shortly before Dorrie in June 2022. Their near-simultaneous loss felt like the breaking of a bridge between generations. Yet their love and knowledge remain deeply woven into their community. Dorrie embodied the continuity of culture in a century of upheaval. Her words recalled a world before nuclear blasts, before mining, oil and gas. She was living proof that despite all these dislocations, language, culture and kinship endures. It still does. Before she left, she offered a challenge: “When I die, who’s going to take over? Who’s going to talk about the land?” That responsibility now rests with all of us — not just to honour her memory, but to act on it. To listen to elders.
