Pilbara paediatrician recognised with specialist award

A Karratha-based paediatrician has been recognised for his hard work and dedication after being named specialist of the year (non-GP) at the 2019 WA Country Doctors’ Awards, held in March.

Anand Deshmukh is a solo paediatrician who delivers clinics to communities in the Pilbara including Karratha, Roebourne, Pannawonica and Onslow, as well as responding to all paediatric emergency cases.

Rural Health West chief executive Tim Shackleton said Dr Deshmukh was an outstanding country doctor with many notable clinical accomplishments.

“Well regarded for his impeccable work ethic and professionalism, he provides round-the-clock care for his patients,” he said.

Dr Deshmukh said he had moved to the Pilbara 11 years ago, living first in Port Hedland before moving to Karratha, and was passionate about indigenous health.

“There are a lot of challenges in my role because I’m the only paediatrician in the area,” he said.

“I have to know exactly what’s going on with each of the children in my care at all times, which is a big ask but really rewarding.”

WA Country Health Service chief executive Jeff Moffet said Dr Deshmukh was dedicated to providing his community with kind and compassionate paediatric care.

“Dr Deshmukh is a patient educator who is always willing to share his knowledge with others,” he said.

“Described by the panel as a quiet achiever, he is a very worthy recipient of this award”.

The awards, held by RHW and WACHS, celebrate the contributions of clinicians working across rural WA.
