Pegs Creek back-to-back West Pilbara Cricket Association T20 women’s champions

Pegs Creek survived an early scare to claim back-to-back crowns in West Pilbara Cricket Association Women’s T20 competition in a gripping final against Karratha Falcons. The final took place on March 26 at the Karratha Leisureplex, with the Falcons winning the toss and sending the table-toppers Pegs in to bat. The risky decision paid off when Janelle Miller trapped Kassie Patterson lbw to leave Crabs 1-35. Falcons pounced on the momentum shift, dismissing Bronwyn Thomson and Cerys English to leave Crabs faltering at 3-47. A fantastic fielding effort from Lauren Fleury saw the dangerous Jessica Creighton run out for just nine to leave her side at 4-53. Some middle order hitting from Ashleigh Faneco (17) and Amy Rushton (15) helped guide the reigning premiers to 8-113. In reply, Falcons got off to a slow start, slipping to 3-34 after seven overs. A quickfire 20 from Emily Martin gave the side some hope but in the end it was not enough, with the Falcons finishing on 7-80. Martin was the top scorer for her side, while Faneco and Kerrie Patterson took three and two wickets respectively to defend the total. It capped off a remarkable run for the Pegs Creek Crabs who went undefeated all season to go back-to-back champions. Creighton took out the best batting aggregate and batting average awards for the season, while Karratha Falcons’ Ava Fountain was awarded best junior cricketer. The women’s champion cricketer went to Dampier Taverner’s Kiara Ganzer, who also took home best bowling average.
