Passion for rescue work the driver

Marine rescue volunteers from the North West had their dedication recognised this month at the WA Marine Rescue Awards. Marine Rescue Port Walcott volunteer Thomas Knight and Marine Rescue branches in Exmouth and Coral Bay were among the winners crowned at the ceremony in Perth. The Exmouth and Coral Bay teams were awarded the Outstanding Group Operations win for their efforts relating to a capsized vessel in June in Coral Bay where two people lost their lives. Exmouth Volunteer Marine Rescue commander Rusty Ellis said while the award win was “sensational”, what was most special was meeting with the family of the victims of the tragic accident. “The award was highly unexpected but very much appreciated,” he said. “We had the privilege while we were down there the next morning together with Coral Bay. We had a breakfast with the son that survived the accident and his brother and their respective partners who joined us for the breakfast because they wanted to meet the Exmouth crew and that was very good, it was quite special.” Thomas Knight, 20, won the Youth Achievement award for his service at Marine Rescue Port Walcott where he has worked as a skipper, navigator and second-in-command for vessel recoveries. He also works tirelessly behind the scenes to recruit new volunteers, assist at open days and take on committee roles. Mr Knight said he’d always had an interest in marine rescue and was proud of his achievements. “It felt awesome. All my hard work paid off and I was recognised,” he said. “Marine rescue is a big passion of mine. I enjoy being out there. You learn some awesome things.”
