Female golfers from across the region got in the swing of things at the weekend as they had a chance to shine at an annual women-only tournament.

The Karratha Golf Club hosted the 2020 Pilbara Ladies’ Open, with each division hotly contested.

Held over Saturday and Sunday, the competition pitted golfers from around the region, including Port Hedland, Karratha, and Exmouth, against each other to determine who was the best.

The A-grade stroke winner was Karratha’s Sunan Ong-Arch, who defended her crown from last year, followed closely by June Worsley.

Lorraine Shales was the net winner over Tracey Keown.

It was a hotly contested B-grade, with the competition using a 36-hole Stableford format.

Kathie Couzens proved too strong for the rest of the division, taking out the win over Judy Hill and Beryl Lynn.

Jenni Peters had the best Stableford score for Saturday, while Danica Thoms had the best Stableford score on Sunday.

The C-grade came to a nailbiting conclusion, with Tania Wilcocks taking the win over Marguerite Jacka and Blaine Cattan.

Chrissy Direen took out best Saturday score, while Tracey Smyth had the best Sunday Stableford score.

Saturday night included a dinner party, with this year’s theme being Witches of the North, and the all-important caddy auction to raise money for charity.

Participants came dressed to impress as witches, while in the caddy auction bids were taken for 10 men to caddy for the women on Sunday. The auction raised $1590, and a raffle made a further $422, with a total of $2012 to be donated to breast cancer and bowel cancer chartities.

Next year’s Pilbara Ladies’ Open will be held in Port Hedland.
