Newcomers shown the ropes Karratha Water Polo have a try day

There was plenty of fun to be had in the pool over the weekend when Karratha water polo players showed interested members of the public the ropes. The Karratha Water Polo Association hosted their annual have a try day at the Karratha Leisureplex on Saturday to give possible junior and senior players a taste of the water polo action. Participants were taken through the basic drills and skills required to play the game and given a rundown on the upcoming season. Meanwhile players from the A-grade and B-grade competition have already started training as the clock ticks down to the start of the season on October 14. KWPA member Meredith Bailey said the event was an opportunity for people to have a go at the game without any pressure or commitments. “Despite the date change we had a really good turnout of fresh-faced newbies. We got a couple of B-graders coming along to trial the first time and I think it was good considering first day of school holidays,” she said. Bailey said a highlight for the association would be hosting the 2022 country championships. “We'll see teams from all across WA, as far south as Peel and up to Port Hedland, they'll come and participate in a long weekend competition. So that's something to look forward to in March,” she said. Bailey said the upcoming season would see flipper ball competition moved to Friday nights. “Flipper ball will be a Friday fortnightly tournament, and we're going to get the Aqua run going and a bit of sausage sizzle as well as the young players trying out and of course our regular season will kick off on Thursday, October 14.”
