New residents deserve to know where the “secret” Pilbara waterholes are, so take them there

Forget the excellent fishing, the nine months of perfect weather and the lack of formality; the best thing about life in the Pilbara is chasing waterfalls and exploring waterholes after a good wet season downpour. The thrill of venturing back to your favourite cascades to see how it compares to the last deluge and those cool, freshwater respites found deep in the gorges and river pools make putting up with the heat and humidity worthwhile. It is a shame then some locals have it in their minds new arrivals to town don’t deserve this pleasure. I was disappointed while scrolling through Instagram recently to see a a video shared of Bridge Pool, about 50km out of Karratha. The video was nice and of course it was great to see our landscape featured. What wasn’t so nice was a local telling a fellow Pilbarian who was asking where it was that “it was a secret unlikely to be told”. I have always told people one of the best things about life in the Pilbara is how easy it is to be accepted as a local. This attitude flies in the face of that. It is fair enough to keep these places secret from tourists — they are happy with Karijini and Millstream — but locals, whether you have been here for five minutes or 50 years, deserve to be let in on our hidden gems. Telling a few more people will not all of a sudden turn Goanna Leg into Dales Gorge, nor will helping a newcomer reach Conzinc Bay turn it into something resembling the sardine-fests that are Perth beaches. There is more than enough space up here to share with the locals, and letting those new to town in on the secrets will help more people get the red dirt in their veins. So next time a new resident in town asks you where George Gorge, Conzinc Bay, Red Dog Gorge etc are, tell them. Hell, pack some bush chooks in the esky and go with them. PS someone please tell me where Bridge Pool is. George Gorge High clearance 4WD recommended You could get in here with an unmodified 4WD but I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if the rivers are still flowing. Follow the same track to Narrina Gorge (below) and you will find a track heading east just before you reach the pool. It crosses the riverbed at the north end of the pool which can sometimes be underwater so care is needed here. Once across the riverbed, follow the track that hugs the edge of the ranges for nearly 9km and you will arrive at the entrance to George Gorge. From here you can drive into the gorge and find your own waterhole to set up for the day. Google Maps coordinates: 21°23'37.1"S 117°20'10.6"E Goanna Leg Gorge 2WD accessible. About 70km inland from the coast on the Karratha to Tom Price Road you will come across a creek crossing next to a Rio Tinto rail bridge. From here you can park under the bridge or, if you have a 4WD, can drive along the track leading from the north pillar of the bridge. Follow the north branch of the riverbed about 300m from the highway and you will find a small gorge with a beautiful waterhole and, if you are there after some good rain, a great waterfall. Google Maps coordinates: 21°16'37.0"S 117°04'06.1"E Narrina Gorge and Black Hill Pool 4WD/AWD accessible Just 3.7km east of Python Pool is a little track on the right side of the road. Go down that, follow it for about 1.5km and you are there. This swimming hole requires a good wet season, like the one we are currently experiencing, to really come to life. A track on the left hand side of the Roebourne-Wittenoom road 200m further north will lead you to Black Hill Pool. Google Maps coordinates: 21°20'43.5"S 117°16'05.7"E Conzinc Bay Boat or high-clearance 4WD only Yes, not a waterhole, but this is another speccy swimming spot some people like to try and keep quiet. It is the best beach on Murujuga (Burrup Peninsula) but requires a lifted fourbie and at times a disregard for your side steps to get there. From the end of the tarmac on Burrup Road follow the sand track along Withnell Bay. Keep going as it becomes rocky — there will be a small hill climb followed by a rocky descent which flattens back out to sand. Eventually you will come across a mangroves jutting out below a rocky hill. You will see a gap in the mangroves which leads up the infamous jump up — a 50m right of passage for local four-wheel-drivers and the reason you see so many dented side steps around town. About 700m past the jump up you will see a few tracks to the left. Stay right and you will end up all the way to Flying Foam Passage up the top of Murujuga which is well worth a trip too. Take the third or fourth track left to Conzinc Bay where there is plenty of beach to find your own spot. Google Map coordinates: 20°33'13.0"S 116°48'24.0"E
