National win for Karratha amateur boxer

A Karratha boxer has claimed a national title at a major Australian amateur boxing tournament.

Raiders Boxing Club mem-ber, 20-year-old Cody Scale, won the 75CKG division of the National Golden Gloves competition in Brisbane late last month after defeating other fighters in a series of knockout rounds.

Raiders coach Shane McDonald said it was a big achievement for Scale, who he said had improved greatly since starting with the club.

“It’s a good step for the level that he’s at,” he said.

“It shows he’s the best in his experience level in the country, which is really good.

“It’s definitely improved his confidence.”

He described Scale —who has been boxing for several years, including one with the Raiders — as a dedicated boxer who always pushed himself.

Scale was the only representative from the Raiders to compete at the Golden Gloves this year, though the club also sent three members in 2013.

They all won silver but Scale’s win marks the club’s first gold medal at the tournament.

McDonald said Scale’s success had not only boosted his own confidence but also inspired everyone else at the Raiders.

“Everyone’s gotten so much encouragement from him having gone to the competition ... from the North West of WA and been able to win something nationally,” he said.

“I’ve now got other fighters keen to get back in the ring.”

The National Golden Gloves is an open boxing competition for amateurs, which any non-professional boxer in Australia can enter.
