Mayuga Majik take the win in Dampier Basketball Association 2023 Grand Final

In a showdown for the ages, the Mayuga Majik emerged victorious against the West Coast Balaz, securing the championship title in the Dampier Basketball Association’s 2023 Grand Final. The crowd was treated to an enthralling contest that had fans on the edge of their seats, with Mayuga Majik clinching the win with a final score of 39 points to West Coast Balaz’s 27. From the tip-off, it was evident that both teams had earned their place in the finals. They showcased their exceptional skills, athletic prowess, and stamina, keeping fans gripped throughout the closely contested grand final match. The first half of the game was a relentless battle, with both teams matching each other’s goals. As the half-time buzzer sounded, the scoreboard reflected the intensity of the game, with West Coast Balaz trailing by just one point, 15 to 16. The Mayuga Majik pulled away in the second half, thanks in large part to the stand-out performances of number 11, Claude Eaton, and number 13, O’Shea Wailu, who led the scoring charge and secured their team’s victory. Preston Snook of Mayuga Majik was named the most valuable player of the match. Among the top scorers of the grand final were Wailu, who contributed 12 crucial points for Mayuga Majik, and Duane Cedar, who notched 11 points for West Coast Balaz. The grand final not only marked a thrilling conclusion to the Dampier Basketball Association’s winter league competition but also symbolised the culmination of the hard work and dedication of its founders, Steve Semeniuk and Marcie Cicerello. Their vision of ensuring year-round basketball in Karratha became a reality with the successful inaugural season of the association. The Dampier Basketball Association’s Winter League began in May and concluded in September, featuring games every Friday night at the Karratha Leisureplex. With 10 teams competing, including two mixed teams and a strong focus on junior player involvement, the league drew passionate basketball enthusiasts from the community. An exciting development for the association was its partnership with Basketball WA as an affiliated association, which brought a wealth of resources and benefits, contributing significantly to the success of the inaugural season. Cicerello expressed her gratitude for the support received from committee members, referees, and sponsors. She reiterated the association’s commitment to their motto “Bringing the fun back to the game”, and proudly stated that they had achieved precisely that during their remarkable first season.
