A Wickham man accused of setting fire to a mattress under the patio of his daughter’s house, causing more than $200,000 of damage, has been granted bail. Steven Smith appeared in Karratha Magistrate’s Court via video link from Hakea Prison last Tuesday and Wednesday, when magistrate Michelle Ridley granted him bail. Ms Ridley said while the charges Mr Smith was facing were serious, she was satisfied she could place conditions that would prevent him from reoffending and keep the community safe. This included Mr Smith having to report to Community Corrections and comply with its directions, as well as him not being allowed to consume alcohol or illicit substances. Before making the decision regarding bail, Ms Ridley also ordered a mental health report for Mr Smith. Police allege Mr Smith set the mattress alight on Friday, September 4 after becoming verbally abusive towards his daughter. The flames took hold of the house and the premises suffered damage worth in excess of $200,000. Mr Smith is due to face court again on November 3.
