Locals warned as fire ignites near Withnell Bay

A bushfire warning has been issued for people near Withnell Bay as a bushfire ignites in the national park.

The fire began in the northern part of Murujuga National Park, 18km north-east of Dampier.

While there is no immediate danger, the access track to Withnell Bay is closed until further notice and travellers are warned of excess smoke in the air.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the Department of Parks and Wildlife is managing the fire with firefighters monitoring the situation.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services have advised travellers to avoid the area if possible. however if they do drive through the area turn headlights on, drive slowly and watch for emergency services personnel.
