About 200 motorists were caught speeding every day over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, several of which were hooning offences described by Pilbara police as “disgusting”. The multanova snapped multiple speeders in excess of 45km/h in Karratha over the three-day weekend, including a motorbike doing 150km/h and a car doing 120km/h in a 70km/h zone. Five cars were also snapped doing 130km/h in a 90km/h on Point Samson Road. Pilbara District co-ordinator Sergeant Ian Morris said the speeding was unacceptable. “I know the message is getting across and the camera operators do agree with that on the main roads but on your back streets, it’s still not getting through,” he said. “People don’t realise you can sit on 100km/h in a 70 zone and with your breaking and extra fuel use, you’re only seconds quicker getting somewhere. “Just slow down and enjoy your drive.” Sgt Morris warned motorists to slow down or risk losing their license ahead of the long weekend and said the multanova would remain in the Pilbara for as long as needed until they get the amount of speeders down. Police will continue to target drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving.
