Fresh bread stocks in Tom Price and Paraburdoo have been running “rye” in recent weeks because of issues getting the produce to the inland towns via plane.

A Coles spokeswoman said the availability of some bread products had been temporarily reduced because of carriage restrictions on full flights coming into Paraburdoo.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience and are working with our suppliers and the airlines to have our full range of bread available this week,” she said.

Tom Price resident Wendy Parish said the fact this could happen in the 21st century was “loave-some”.

“I don’t use a lot of bread but I like to have it there for toast, or for making the hubby’s lunch when he goes to work,” he said.

“It really halves your imagination as to what you can make; I can’t put a sausage in bread or make a sandwich. It’s frustrating because, in this day and age, you shouldn’t have to be without bread.”

Mrs Parish said the lack of fresh bread supply was particularly worrying at this time of year because of the amount of tourists in the area.
