Karratha motorists praised as Pilbara police record lower than average drink-driving offences

With low number of offences recorded, Pilbara police have praised the Karratha community for their behaviour on the road during the festive period. More than 1200 drivers were breath tested in Karratha between December 24 and January 9, with six drivers found to be in excess of the limit. A 27-year-old woman has been charged with DUI after blowing a 0.163 and will appear in court next month. Three other drink-drivers received a $1000 fine for being in excess of 0.05 and another two will have court appearances for being in excess of 0.08. Pilbara District co-ordinator Sergeant Ian Morris said drink-driving was never tolerated. “In relation to the drink-driving, any positive is disappointing but it’s lower than what we normally get over the Christmas and New Year period,” he said. “Karratha gets a ‘well done’ for the way they’ve behaved over the double-demerit period.” Nineteen infringements were issued for speed-related offences. Sgt Morris also warned a mobile speed camera could be brought back up again to target speeding motorists. “I want to remind the community that it could turn up at anytime and the first time you see it, it may be too late to slow down, so do the right thing,” he said, The multanova, the first to be wheeled out in the Pilbara for three years, snapped 201 drivers during its first day of operation in August last year.
