Karratha man who allegedly poured petrol and lit on fire the car his partner was sleeping in yet to get bail

A Karratha man who allegedly poured petrol on the bonnet of the car his partner was sleeping in and lit it on fire is yet to receive bail. The 34-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, appeared before the Karratha Magistrates Court on April 27 charged with criminal damage by fire and one count of with intent to kill committing an act likely to endanger human life. The court heard around 1am on April 18 in Pegs Creek the man and his partner were intoxicated and got into an argument. The accused then became aggressive and pushed the victim over and told her to leave — shoving her out of the door. As she left he slammed the door on her hand. The victim then went and slept in her car when the man allegedly came out punched the side window and threw a car battery at the windscreen. He then poured petrol on the car bonnet and lit it on fire with police prosecutors saying a neighbour heard him yelling “I’m going to f...... kill you” and “I’m going to burn you alive”. Police prosecutors said the man did not have a job to come back to and the victim told police she would not feel safe if the man was granted bail. Magistrate Gavin MacLean said the alleged act was one of “grandiose stupidity”. “It’s not the case that you poured petrol over the entirety of the car rather a patch,” he said. The matter was adjourned until May 18 for a bail application.
