The motion for a hotel to be developed at the Karratha Quarter was passed by councillors last night with a 6-2 vote.

It means the City of Karratha will make a $10 million investment to Pacifica Development in order to build the hotel.

There was debate over whether it was appropriate for the City to get involved in private enterprise, but ultimately the majority of councillors said the hotel was strategically important and enough due diligence has been done to justify its approval.

Councillors Gary Bailey and Joanne Waterstrom-Muller opposed the motion.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said council hoped construction would start in early 2019.
