More than 40 excited young Auskickers from Karratha and Paraburdoo took to Domain Stadium to play a half-time football game in front of a huge crowd and meet their sports heroes earlier this month.

A combined Pilbara group, including children aged seven and under from both towns and a large parent contingent, travelled to Perth earlier this month to feature at half-time of the West Coast Eagles and Carlton round 21 game.

The young footballers played two seven-minute halves in front of tens of thousands of fans in what was an exhilarating first-time experience for the group.

Their trip also involved a tour of Domain Stadium on the Friday night, watching a Colts game and meeting Eagles star Nic Naitanui.

Karratha Auskick joint co-ordinator Craig Moore said it was an exciting opportunity for the young football fans.

“I think it encourages them to stay in the sport,” he said.

“It gives them something to look forward to. It’s a highlight.”

“You get some kids who are very actively into it and some who just show up so it gives them all more exposure and something to do as a group.”

With big numbers of Auskickers in both towns, the final group was made up of a mix of coach-selected players and others drawn out of a hat.

Mr Moore thanked businesses which had sponsored the Karratha team on their trip, including Handy Hands, Troy’s Tyres To You and Hunter Mechanical.
