Karratha Airport has been re-opened to the public following an evacuation this morning.

However, passengers have been warned to expect flight delays.

The airport was evacuated earlier this morning after police located a suspicious item being carried by a passenger.

Officers cordoned off the area while they assessed the situation and whether the item posed a danger to anyone.

The police investigation into the matter is ongoing and the passenger is continuing to assist police with their inquiries.

Several hundred passengers and staff were removed from the airport during the evacuation and four planes were grounded.

Karratha police thanked people for their patience.
