Group’s strength & resilience on show with Wangaba

The enduring qualities of the longest running arts centre in Karratha is on display as part of a brand new exhibition. The Wangaba Roebourne Art Group launched the show last Thursday at the Red Earth Arts Precinct. Wangaba acting chair Josephine Samson said the exhibition represented the strength and resilience of the group. “In Wangaba Strong we are celebrating the significant changes and growth for our arts centre over the past few years,” she said. WRAG general manager Linda Rowlands said while she has had her work displayed previously, it was still confronting. Ms Rowlands said her piece entitled “Always was, Always will be” was inspired by last year’s NAIDOC theme. “I’m hoping that people will look at it and get a sense that it’s not just the generation that you’ve grown up with, it’s not just the generation that your grandparents have grown up with, it’s right back through time to when there weren’t the bright lights or roads,” she said. “No matter what the future holds, for Indigenous people in Australia, that is their mindset. This has always been our home, and it always will be no matter what.” The exhibition runs until May 23.
