The Federal Government has committed $2.3 million to establishing a Headspace in the Pilbara.

Durack MHR Melissa Price made the announcement in Karratha on Monday morning.

Headspace supports youth with mental health and drug and alcohol issues, as well as vocational training.

Ms Price said due to the size of the Pilbara a different model of service delivery would have to be trialled.

“Headspace tends to be like a shop front where young people can go to get help with mental health, drug and alcohol problems and vocation help,” she said.

“Because of the vastness of the Pilbara I have really been pushing for a different model because of we were to have a headspace shop front in Karratha, well how does that help young people in Newman, Dampier, Port Hedland or Tom Price.

“We are going to have to trial more of an outreach type of program... where rather than young people coming into a shop front, health professionals go out to the young people.”

Ms Price said the Primary Health Network had been worked on a delivery model for a couple of months and expected to have the service ready to go by the end of the year.
