Community rallies around injured junior
Dampier Sharks and the North Pilbara football community are calling for residents to rally around a young local player who was seriously injured in a road accident last month.
Junior Sharks player Angus Johnston, 15, injured his back in a motorbike crash in Dampier in early January and is receiving treatment and rehabilitation in Perth.
Former Sharks coach and Powder Puff game co-organiser Kristian Dicton said it was sad news but Angus was “in a good mindset” and it was good to see the community pitching in.
“I’ve been fortunate to coach him for Dampier and the Pilbara under-15s representative side,” he said.
“He’s a good footy player and a young local kid.”
The Sharks have set up a GoFundMe page aiming to raise $30,000 for Angus’ rehabilitation costs.
Angus’ club has also arranged for a novelty Powder Puff game to be played in his honour — a short match between a men’s and women’s team which requires the men to play in thongs and with a beer in their hand at all times and without tackling, while the women can go all out. It will be held on Dampier’s Windy Ridge Oval on February 12 at 2pm. Donate at gofundme.com/angus-johnstons-rehabilitation.
