City of Karratha refuses application for childcare premises due to to traffic congestion and parking concerns

An application for a proposed childcare premises has yet again been refused by the City of Karratha due to traffic congestion, location and on-site parking concerns. The application for the proposed daycare centre at 3 Walkington Circle, Millars Well was first received on December 10 2020 but was refused. Following this, the applicant lodged a review with the State Administrative Tribunal who ordered the City to reconsider its decision based on additional information submitted by the applicant. City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the additional information provided still did not address parking and traffic concerns. “Councillors were concerned about the traffic and the fact that it’s close to the intersection that people will be parking on the street if the other three bays are full,” he said. “People might start parking on that vacant land next door, which could be an issue as well so that was the major reason in the end that council knocked it back.” A City of Karratha officers report stated the proposed development would have unacceptable adverse impacts on surrounding properties and the amenity of the residential area. The matter will now go to the SAT, who will make the final decision.
