City of Karratha partners with Perth Symphony Orchestra to provide local musos more opportunities

Karratha musicians will be given the opportunity to work directly with a WA performing arts organisation as part of a new arts and development program. The Karratha New Music Development program, a three-year partnership between Perth Symphony Orchestra and the City of Karratha, will offer musicians the chance to work with visiting WA musicians, conductors, composers and artists. The program will include a range of residencies, workshops, community engagement and performances for the Pilbara community. Karratha mayor Peter Long said the partnership was a great addition to the City’s arts scene and would be beneficial for the community. “The Karratha New Music Development program provides opportunity for our existing, local artists to network, learn and develop their skills alongside established PSO artists,” he said. “We will see powerful, compelling, and memorable performances come out of our region, contributing to a stronger, more connected, creative and capable local arts scene.” Perth Symphony Orchestra chief executive Bourby Webster said she was excited to connect the Karratha community with some of WA’s talented musicians and musical artists. “Developing our existing relationship with communities like those in Karratha has been a 10-year commitment for Perth Symphony, taking music out of the concert hall, into the community,” she said. “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to connect with the community in a variety of ways, including workshops, school incursions, community jam sessions and more.”
