A car was set alight in a Karratha driveway this morning, sending smoke across Dampier Highway.

Volunteer firefighters were called to the scene of a house in Peg’s Creek, across the road from the Leisureplex, at about 11.15am to extinguish the blaze, but the white four-wheel-drive had been destroyed by the time they arrived.

No one was injured in the fire and it did not spread to any other properties.

However, Karratha police received several calls from drivers at the time saying smoke had drifted across Dampier Highway and was affecting visibility.

Police believe the fire was deliberately lit and a person is assisting them with inquiries.

The investigation is ongoing.
