Bulgarra the new home for mental health facility

Tom ZaunmayrPilbara News
VideoMore than a quarter of FIFO workers report high psychological distress, according to a study.

The east side of Bulgarra has been proposed as the new site of a mental health step up/step down facility in Karratha.

Brochures were sent out to nearby residents on Friday informing them of a proposal to locate the $15 million facility on Lot 503 Gregory Way, Bulgarra.

The site is bound by a residential area to the north, Searipple Road to the west, vacant land to the east and Millstream Road to the south.

Currently the seldom-used Rex Webb park sits on the land.

Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel took to social media to support the proposed site.

“We all talk about mental health as a major issue for the people of the Pilbara, so it is excellent to see this development going ahead,” he said.

“I urge the community to get behind the building of this facility to address the mental health issues that can often go unnoticed in our Pilbara.”

The original location across the road from the RSL Club in Millars Well was canned after community backlash about the proximity to a primary school and licensed venue, and distance from health and retail facilities.

The new site is about 200 metres from St Pauls Primary School and 400 metres from the shopping centre.
