Broome Mixed Martial Arts dominates at this year’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Northwest Championships

Broome Mixed Martial Arts reigned supreme after dominating their competitors at this year’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Northwest Championships. The competition returned with teams arriving in Karratha from Tom Price and Broome to test out their skills after last year’s tournament was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Originally launched in 2019 as a round robin tournament, this year’s event was a one-off competition which saw 90 participants from across the Kimberley and Pilbara take part. The event had 27 different categories across both gi and no gi brackets. Broome Mixed Martial Arts took out the championships with a dominant performance across the day, scoring 157 points with 50 wins and 26 losses. Coming in second was Tom Price’s Iron Python Jiu Jitsu with 63 points while Renagade Karratha finished in third place. BMMA finished with 15 gold, six silver and four bronze medals. Some of the standout performers included Karratha’s Cory Amato, competing out of Primal MMA, who took out the Brown belt masters 83kg divisions for both the gi and no gi brackets. Renegade Karratha head instructor Camerin Coles said the tournament was about giving members an opportunity to ready themselves for State championships later this year. Coles said because the the clubs in the North West are small you end up rolling with the same people frequently. “You learn each other's games, so you know how to stop each other from playing their game,” he said. “Having the North West championships gives you that opportunity to try that out on people that you don't normally roll with, they don't understand what's going on, and you can test the waters.” Coles said 70 per cent of participants at this years championships were competing in their first tournament. “It's not about gold medals... it's really about having that first competition, to be able to share that journey with them,” he said.
