Beard a cut above at Nickol Bay Speedway FeNaClNG meet
Kyle Beard has come out on top of the wingless pack at Nickol Bay Speedway’s annual two-night FeNaClNG meet on August 2 and 3.
Beard got off to a quick start in the feature race and was chased by Trevor Jolly and Jayd Mathews, who had an exciting battle for second place, passing each other multiple times before Mathews snuck away.
Speedway president Steve O’Dowd said Beard was impressive all weekend, but the locals also did a great job.
“We had a lot of new guys who started wingless for the first time this year,” he said.
“Lee Tattam, Cameron Inch and Brett White all pulled off very good placings, which is great to see for local drivers.”
While the wingless was the main event, the juniors also drew a crowd with drivers travelling from Broome and Perth to compete.
There were two junior divisions, new stars for those with less than two years under their belt and top stars for those with more experience.
In the top stars, Riley Dunne, Seth Hinsey and Cody Mackellar took out the first three places, while in new stars, Hunter Downs, Chevy Francis and Steven Peaker drove to glory.
O’Dowd said parents and grandparents had travelled to see the juniors in action.
“We’re really pushing to get young members into the club because they’re the future of it,” he said.
“We had a lot of people say the standard of racing for the juniors was outstanding, which is always good to get from people who are travelling to the club.”
There are two club meetings at Nickol Bay Speedway left for the year, on August 24 and September 7, plus a family-fun day night on September 21 and a demo derby on New Year’s Eve.
