Awards salute young career stars
Karratha’s young professionals recently gathered to celebrate and recognise young people in the community who have been kicking career goals.
The group for young professionals aged under 35 was formed in 2014. This is the second year in a row it has held an awards night.
At an event on November 15, 150 people gathered to see eight awards presented, including a people’s choice prize which anyone who made a submission was eligible to win.
KYP president Jessica Ireland said this year the winners of the awards were selected from a nomination and a formal written submission.
“It meant we could conduct a higher calibre of judging and get people used to what a normal awards process would be,” she said.
“We had a panel of external judges who went over the submissions as the committee felt it was necessary to keep out of it and make sure the judging was unbiased.”
The main award of the night, for Karratha’s young professional of the year, went to Gabby Goodie, who was recognised for her work as the founder of The Sage Society and the not-for-profit campaign FIGHT IT LIKE A BOSS.
Ms Ireland said Ms Goodie was also a successful and much sought-after clinical psychologist, the owner and director of Cygnet Clinic Pilbara, a published author in the field of eating disorders, and a mother of two.
“Gabby is passionate about mental health and is continuously striving to make it more accessible for all,” she said.
“She regularly runs free community events to educate and help those struggling in the community and is driven to change the stigma that surrounds it.”
The people’s choice winner, which attracted a total of 1600 votes, was naturopath Helena Netscher, while the up and comer award went to Adele Scala.
Other winners included Dee Juskov for community contributor of the year, Frank Ye for corporate achiever of the year, Brigette McDowell for innovator of the year, 6 Star Electrical and Solar owner James Corea for small business of the year, and Yudi Shekhawat for KYP committee person of the year.
